A Mother’s Journey: Amy Ashley’s Story

Watching Ashley go through spinal fusion surgery was one of the most difficult experiences of our life. As her parents, we have always tried to protect her, comfort her and be the one who could fix anything with a hug, a talk or a bit of encouragement. But this… this was something we couldn’t fix.

When we first heard the words scoliosis, we hoped it would be something manageable. Maybe with a brace. Maybe with time. But as her curve grew and her pain became more unmanageable, we had to face a reality we didn’t want: Ashley needed spinal fusion surgery. Hearing those words felt like the air was knocked out of us. We wanted to be strong for her, but inside we were scared- terrified honestly.

Leading up to the surgery, Ashley carried herself with a grace and courage that amazed me. Of course she had her moments of fear, and we had many late night talks filled with “what-ifs” and tears. But even then she was braver-braver than we think she realized. The day of surgery was one we will never forget. Watching her be wheeled away down that long hospital, giving me a thumbs-up even though I could see the nerves in her eyes- that image is forever etched in my memory. I held it together for her, but as soon as she was out of sight, I cried. Not because I didn’t believe in her strength, but because I wished so badly I could take her place.

The recovery was not a straight line. There were hard days. There was pain, frustration, tears and moments where we wished we could fast forward time. But there were also incredible victories- the first time she sat up, stood and walked again while smiling through the discomfort. The surgery didn’t define her- it revealed her. Ashley emerged not only taller physically, but stronger mentally and emotionally. She faced something life changing and didn’t let it break her. In fact, she grew from it.
